What Animals live the longest?


Sanjeev asked - "Ma'am,among the animals which one lives the longest?"

Ma'am replied - "Among mammals, it is believed that the elephant lives the longest. There are stories of elephants who lived up to 200 years but of course this has no proof.There may be elephants who lived till they were 100 years old but most of them die at 60. Among the mammals the life span of the hippopotamus is 41 years, rhinoceros 40 years, bear 34 years, monkey 20 years, cat 23 years and dog 22 years.

Among birds, it is believed that parrot and eagles have lives more than 100 years but this also has no proof.The records show the life span of eagle to be 55, parrot's 54,white pelican's 51. Among the smaller birds: sparrow 23, starling 17, canary 22.


Among the fishes, carp has quite a long life of 25 years. But the European catfish beats it since it has been known to live for more than 60 years. American eel too has a long life- span_it's 50.

But no other animal can beat a tortoise.One famous tortoise called "Mauritius tortoise" lived for 152 years.There is a record to show that a tortoise known as "Carolina tortoise" in the USA lived for 123 years!"
